In a nail biting finish, Sweden came from behind to claim the gold medal in mixed doubles curling, giving the USA the silver medal.

The “Duo from Duluth,” Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin, were engaged in a very back and forth matchup, but a critical eighth end mistake by the duo opened the door for the Swedish team to take the lead. The final hammer, thrown by Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa whose throws had a 97% accuracy throughout the Olympics, knocked out a key American stone to win the game.

Despite the final round heartbreak, Thiesse and Dropkin made history as the first American pair to medal in the mixed doubles curling event, which debuted in 2018 at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. Thiesse also became the first American female curler to medal at the games.

“It was a really great game,” Thiesse said on the NBC broadcast after the loss. “We just needed to be a little bit sharper today, but we’re not going to let that game take away from the week that we had.”

The reigning gold medalists going into the games, Italy, took the bronze medal after knocking off Great Britain earlier in the day.
