Jalen Hurts’ blood clot took a turn for the worse.

The Eagles franchise quarterback, who went on injured reserve with a blood clot on Saturday, spent the last portion of this week undergoing additional testing. That testing revealed that the blood clot is now a deep vein clot and now has clots blocking arteries in his lungs, according to an official statement from the team and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn.

Hurts is now expected to go on blood thinners and will not be able to participate in any contact activities, though he can and will continue to condition with the team.

The statement did not confirm a timetable, but NFL Insider Ian Rapoport indicated that the standard course of treatment for conditions like Hurts’ could be around three months. This would put Hurts eligible to return to the field in mid-January, but barring a deep playoff run, Hurts would be out for the remainder of the season.

“This statement details why there was such a dramatic change in the diagnosis for Jalen Hurts,” observed Rapoport on X (formerly Twitter). “When doctors found multiple blood clots in his lungs, it went from being able to manage it to immediate treatment.”

The team and Lynn both indicated in the joint statement that Hurts’ prognosis is very good with no long-term side effects expected. The team is expecting Hurts to resume football activities once off blood thinners. He can also offer insights and support the development of backup QB Tanner McKee, who filled in for Hurts on Sunday and will continue to do so throughout Hurts’ treatment.

“[Hurts] will remain active around the team,” the statement noted.

McKee went 26 for 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown, and took three sacks during Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. He will work through the team’s practice this week to prepare for Monday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
