As the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles draw closer, things are taking shape for the first games back in the United States in 26 years.

This week, the LA28 Organizing Committee kicked off several thematic announcements by revealing the official slogan of the games, “Stars Align.”

The slogan for each Olympic Games edition is part of its overall brand, and helps unify the games’ feel. The goal is to select a slogan that reflects the host city, region, and country. Given that Los Angeles’ and California’s role in the movie industry, the obvious allusion to movie stardom was incorporated.

At the same time, in an official explainer of the slogan, the LA28 Organizing Committee indicated that stars align when dedication meets a generational movement, one that these games will highlight.

“Los Angeles is the place where dreams take flight, and the Olympics show us what’s possible when the world unites,” said LA28 Chairman Casey Wasserman in a statement. “‘Stars Align’ is a call to action, whether you’re an athlete at the peak of your skill, a volunteer welcoming the world to these Games, or a fan cheering passionately from the stands.”

The thematic element of the slogan also comes through in the ceremonies and other productions of the games. The LA28 Organizing Committee also announced that Kathleen Kennedy would take the helm of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as executive producer and would also serve as Head of Ceremonies and Content for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Kennedy previously served as president of Lucasfilm, the production company behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises after the entity was bought by The Walt Disney Company. Kennedy takes over this position from Peter Rice, who will continue as an executive producer of the ceremonies.

For Kennedy, this is a personal moment.

“The Olympics have been a touchstone in my life,” Kennedy said in a statement. “My husband, Frank Marshall, and I have attended virtually every Games since Los Angeles in 1984, and sport remains one of the great unifying experiences we share.”

Kennedy’s appointment has spurred a rumor that legendary composer John Williams is composing a new fanfare for the games, to go alongside the iconic Olympic Fanfare and Theme composed for the 1984 Olympics, also in Los Angeles. Birds Nest Media has not yet been able to confirm this.

As the thematic elements continue to take shape, it’s a sign the Olympics are drawing ever closer.

“We can’t wait for the stars to align in 2028 so we can share this moment with everyone,” noted Wasserman.
