Legal Tampering Day Two: Eagles Agree To Terms With RB Rashaad Penny, Extend Scott and Bradberry

Legal Tampering Day 2-2

This article was updated to include details on Rashaad Penny’s contract that were not immediately available.

It’s day two of the NFL’s Legal Tampering period, which precedes the official Free Agency signing period beginning tomorrow afternoon. The Eagles had a relatively quiet first day, with more players leaving than staying on their long free agency list.

Day two was a different story.

The Eagles agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, bringing him to Philadelphia on a one-year deal worth $1.35 million. The deal cannot go into effect until 4 PM on Wednesday due to league rules.

Penny, drafted 27th overall by the Seahawks in the 2017 NFL Draft, was out for most of the 2022 season due to an ankle injury, but in 2021 was the Seahawks’ leading rusher, rushing 119 times for 749 yards and averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He is a standout rusher, but his injury history is worth noting as he has only been healthy for 42 games in his five seasons with the Seahawks.

The Eagles supplemented Penny’s deal by signing RB Boston Scott, nicknamed the “Giant Killer,” to a one-year $2 million extension.

With these signings, the Eagles say farewell to Miles Sanders, who was drafted 53rd overall by the Eagles in the 2019 NFL Draft. Sanders was the top running back all four years he was in Philadelphia, ending the 2022 regular season with 259 rushes for 1,269 yards and averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Sanders tweeted his goodbye to Philadelphia after the news about Penny was announced.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles signed CB James Bradberry to a three-year, $38 million deal. Bradberry is a leading corner for the Eagles, having netted 54 tackles over the 2022 regular season (including the playoffs), and four interceptions.

DE Brandon Graham, who was signed to a one-year $6 million deal at the end of last week, and C Jason Kelce, who announced yesterday he would return to play for another season. Kelce inked a $14.5 million deal this morning, keeping his status as the highest paid center in the NFL.

Just as significant are the departures. LB Kyzir White is going to the Arizona Cardinals, S Marcus Epps is signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, and T Andre Dillard will be playing for the Tennessee Titans. The players join DT Javon Hargrave and LB TJ Edwards, both of whom came to terms with their future teams yesterday.

With a contract extension for QB Jalen Hurts looming, Eagles GM Howie Roseman is faced with tough decisions as he works on securing the best players he can with around $6 million in cap space. The NFL’s annual salary cap was set this year at $224.8 million, which all teams must be in compliance with as of 4 PM on Wednesday.

Going into the free agency period, the Eagles had ten defensive players eligible for free agency according to OverTheCap.com, out of 21 total. As the Eagles work to plug the holes left by a significant number of defensive starters potentially leaving the team, the Eagles will need to create cap space, potentially by renegotiating contracts with players like Lane Johnson and Darius Slay, the latter of whom wants to stay with the Eagles but was given permission to seek a trade last week.

While major questions remain on how the Eagles will plug the holes left by player departures, on the offensive side at least, things are looking clearer.
