ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles plan to release Darius Slay, according to sources.

The Eagles had given Slay permission to seek a trade before the legal tampering period began, but the two were unable to come to an agreement on a restructured contract. Slay had one year left on his current deal.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the team will release Slay after June 1, which will allow the team to shift most of his cap hit to the 2024 season and result in a 2023 cap hit of just $8.6 million. Releasing Slay before that point would result in his cap hit for this season being over $21 million.

Acquired in 2020 during a trade with the Detroit Lions, and given a 3 year extension worth more than $50 million at that time, Slay was a big contributor to the team. He made two Pro Bowls in his three seasons with the Eagles, and in the 2022 season had three interceptions over the regular season, creating a total of seven in his career with the Eagles. He also had 166 tackles with the team.

Slay said goodbye to Philly on Twitter.

Slay is slated to become a free agent at 4 PM today.
