“Seek Truth and Report It”
With these words, the Society for Professional Journalists lays the standard for all news organizations everywhere. Birds Nest Media strives to do likewise for its audience. Birds Nest Media is at the service of Eagles fans and strive to provide helpful coverage of the team and the sport they love.
To that end, the following guidelines govern Birds Nest Media’s content creation:
Accuracy
All work we generate will be accurate. Verification should occur of all things presented as fact. The perfect world scenario would be that everything presented as fact is doubly-verified; this is not always possible or reasonable, especially with statistical information.
The NFL Game Statistics & Information System provides the overwhelming majority of statistical information used by Birds Nest Media. This system is made available free of charge to all media outlets by the NFL. Uncited statistics come from this system. When other sources provide statistics, they will be cited.
To avoid having to issue significant corrections, rumors are not generally newsworthy. If a rumor become newsworthy, words like “reportedly,” “rumored,” or similar will accompany things that may have occurred but cannot be verified.
While attempts are made to avoid them, occasionally corrections must be made; they will be made promptly and overtly.
Originality
Birds Nest Media strives to provide unique content for its readers. In a perfect world, this would mean that everything generated is original, coming from things that are actually seen and heard. Birds Nest Media sets a high standard for itself and strives to meet it.
At the same time, Birds Nest Media must acknowledge that there is already intense coverage of the National Football League and, especially in Philadelphia, the Eagles. To that end, Birds Nest Media may be excluded from “accredited media” at practices, games, and other team and league functions. To date, Birds Nest Media is more routinely excluded from credentialed access than granted it. When the subject matter includes areas within Birds Nest Media’s primary areas of focus, but Birds Nest Media is not considered “accredited media,” Birds Nest Media will attempt to adjust for this by sourcing its information when the information comes from a credentialed reporter, subject to the guidelines in the Transparency section.
For the avoidance of doubt, Birds Nest Media routinely seeks to cover news from the following areas:
- The Philadelphia Eagles
- The National Football League
- Flag football
- The Olympic Movement, including on the local, national, and international stages
- Major sporting events within the Philadelphia area
- Other events within the Philadelphia area
A Note About Artificial Intelligence
The use of artificial intelligence is becoming more and more prominent in the creative space. It is also more often than not inaccurate. Birds Nest Media does not use artificial intelligence to create or aid in directly creating any content it produces and it avoids using artificial intelligence to indirectly create content (e.g. analyze statistics).
Birds Nest Media is not responsible for the use of artificial intelligence by outside entities, including sources for its stories. Reporting by Birds Nest Media will cite its sources subject to the guidelines stipulated elsewhere in these standards and will avoid using entities that overly rely on artificial intelligence as such sources, but we encourage the reader or viewer to check the source itself for its rules surrounding artificial intelligence use.
As advertisements are served by a third party, Birds Nest Media is not responsible for the use of artificial intelligence in advertisements displayed on its website.
Transparency
It should be very clear to the reader where information comes from. This helps the audience understand how Birds Nest Media determined accuracy.
Information obtained from sources will be cited, ideally by name and affiliation. It should be very clear to the audience when our reporting has unearthed information.
It may be that an anonymous source will need to be cited. Anonymity of sources will be avoided, and promised only when it would be otherwise impossible to obtain information that would provide enhanced value to our audience. To the extent possible, anonymously-received information will be verified through other channels.
Exceptions may be made for “Man On the Street” style videos or conversations with fans for the Birds Nest Podcast. While the real people will be asked for names and background and will be recorded while doing so, this may not always be published. It will be clear to the audience in these cases that the report comes from a real person who is a fan, and not a team representative.
At no time may a single reporter be credited as an anonymous source when reporting on the team or the league occurs. It is possible that, if things are reported by multiple reporters, the citation may be more general, but always alluding to where the information came from. Examples of this in action would include “multiple Eagles beat reporters.”
Conflicts of Interest
Birds Nest Media will be transparent when conflicts of interest occur, disclosing them overtly on the website’s personnel listing when they exist with a particular individual or in the work when they exist only on a particular work regardless of who would’ve created it (e.g. if a sponsor of Birds Nest Media becomes part of the news).
Occasionally, sponsored material may be presented in written work or in the Birds Nest Podcast. These items will always be presented as sponsored elements and will not be passed off as journalistic in any sense of the word. If a company could be considered a sponsor but isn’t, this will also be clearly identified.
Birds Nest Media will not provide financial compensation for sources, and will strive to avoid creating conflicts of interest by accepting financial compensation from sources beyond what is reasonable. Reasonable compensation would be akin to a source paying for a monthly Patreon subscription, or a meal provided while covering the game. Compensation beyond what is reasonable would be a source offering gifts to Birds Nest Media in exchange for coverage.
Conclusion
The above are meant as guiding pillars when it comes to creating content. They are not meant to envision every possible scenario that might occur while reporting. They are, however, heavy influences for making editorial decisions when something falls into gray area. They may be updated as new situations develop.
An outlet is only as good as its integrity. Birds Nest Media strives to be one of the most integrous outlets you can find covering the Philadelphia Eagles and the NFL.
