McKee Leads Eagles In Final Preseason Game, Loss to Colts
The Eagles dropped the last of their three preseason games in a 27-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Tanner McKee played most of the game at quarterback. He went 19 for 34 for 158 passing yards. He also ran once for five yards.
Trey Sermon got the bulk of the running back work, running 16 times for 30 yards, including his longest play of six yards. He also netted the Eagles’ only touchdown of the night.
The Eagles faced off against a Colts offense led by Anthony Richardson, who is the Colts’ starting quarterback after being drafted 4th overall during this year’s draft. Richardson led the offense during the first half, and was relieved in the second half by Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger.
The Eagles got out to a fast start. On the opening kickoff, Devon Allen mishandled the kick and dropped it, but was able to pick it up. He then sprinted down the field for 73 yards. That opening drive was the only one led by Marcus Mariota, who went one for two for 21 passing yards. The drive was also the only one that resulted in an Eagles touchdown.
Deon Cain was the Eagles’ leading receiver, catching it six times for 62 yards. Not far behind was new addition Freddie Swain, who netted six catches for 33 yards.
The game marked the return of former Eagles Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen, who took the head coaching job with the Colts during this offseason, and former Eagles second-string quarterback Gardner Minshew.
Jake Elliott demonstrated his leg and kicking distance again, drilling two field goals from 59 and 51 yards, respectively. He was two yards shy of his longest ever field goal, 61 yards, which was kicked during his debut at Lincoln Financial Field in 2017.
Starters like Jalen Hurts and Jason Kelce did not dress for the game, though they were on the sidelines.
The Eagles were able to force an interception late in the game after Tyreek Maddox-Williams caught a poorly-thrown ball by Ehlinger. The Eagles also gave up a fumble earlier in the game after Joseph Ngata got hit during a catch.
Tonight was the players’ last chance to make an impression on the coaching staff. On Tuesday, August 29, all NFL teams must have their rosters cut down from the 90-man roster that got them through the preseason to the 53-man roster that will carry the Eagles the rest of the way, barring injuries, trades, or signings.
