White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed at today’s press briefing that the Philadelphia Eagles will visit the White House on April 28 as part of the Super Bowl celebrations.
The confirmation comes after an old report indicated that the Eagles declined an invitation to the White House went viral on social media. The White House and the Eagles were quick to debunk the report, as Birds Nest Media reported via a video report on its social media platforms.
“”I know there was a lot of fake news about an invitation that wasn’t sent or was sent.” Leavitt said during her press briefing, “We want to correct the record.”
A longstanding custom for most professional sports champions is that they visit the White House as part of a national celebration of the team’s victory. The celebration is apolitical, and usually consists of the President exchanging pleasantries with the team, a brief address, and a staged photo opportunity. Events like this usually take place in the Rose Garden or in the East Room of the White House, though the exact location has not been announced.
The White House withdrew an invitation to the Philadelphia Eagles following their Super Bowl LII victory when it became apparent that a majority of players and staffwould not make the trip down. Reports at the time indicated that this latter part was due to the political climate surrounding racism in the United States. Leavitt’s comments confirmed a report by CBS 3 Eyewitness News earlier today indicating the invitation had been accepted.
“We sent an invitation, they enthusiastically accepted,” Leavitt said, “and you will see them here on April 28.”
