Team USA to Compete for Gold in Mixed Doubles Curling Final
The Duo from Duluth, Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin, downed Italy in the Mixed Doubles Curling Semifinals 9-8 and will play in the finals on Tuesday.
The Americans went back and forth with Italy, who kept it close throughout. Neither side had a lead larger than 2 points, though the lead changed four times over the course of the game. Italy used its power play in the seventh end to take the lead from the US, but Team USA had the hammer advantage in the final end, meaning that the final throw of the match belonged to the Americans. A double take-out from Dropkin and a final takeout from Thiesse secured two points for Team USA when it used its power play in the eighth end to secure the victory.
Team USA is guaranteed a medal in the event and now plays Sweden in the gold medal game. Sweden beat Great Britain in the semifinals 9-3 after Great Britain lost just one game in the round robin matchups. Thiesse and Dropkin beat the Swedish team yesterday for a spot in the semifinals. Italy and Great Britain will play for the bronze medal.
The gold medal matchup will occur at 12:05 PM ET. All Olympic broadcasts are found on NBC properties.
