Lemley, Kauf Claim Two Medals for Team USA in Women’s Moguls
(US Ski and Snowboard)
Two Americans got to share a podium today.
Liz Lemley and Jaelin Kauf took the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the women’s moguls competition.
Moguls is a variety of freestyle skiing, combining downhill speed with various jumps to determine the final score. Team USA had a chance to get a clean sweep of the podium but only Lemley and Kauf qualified for the medal round.
Lemley’s gold medal came in her Olympic debut, but she had won two gold medals in the youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. She completed the mogul course in 25.81 seconds, which earned her 17.65 points. Lemley got an air score of 17.35 and a turn score of 47.3, which landed her a total score of 82.30 in the final.
Kauf, meanwhile, entered the competition as the reigning silver medalist who was able to successfully defend her silver medal position. Kauf completed the track in 18.48 seconds, earning her an 18.41 point time score. Kauf handled the turns just as well as Lemley, but was slightly behind Lemley in the air score with 14.99 points. These combined for an 80.77 score.
Bronze went to France’s Perrine Laffont, whose combined point total was 78.00.
